Feeling Overwhelmed? Return to Calm

There are moments in every life when everything feels like too much.

Our minds become busy. Our hearts grow weary. We wonder how to find our footing again.

If this is one of those moments for you, please know you are not alone.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do isn’t to solve everything at once. It is simply to return to the present moment—one gentle breath at a time.

As the beloved Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh shared:

When the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates, if everyone panicked, all would be lost. But if even one person on the boat remained calm and centered, it was enough. It showed the way for everyone to survive.

His words remind us that calm is not something we wait for. It is something we cultivate. And in doing so, we quietly become a steady presence for ourselves and for those around us.

One of the simplest ways to return to that steadiness is through the gift of your breath.

During my studies with the HeartMath Institute, I learned a beautiful practice called Heart-Focused Coherence Breathing. It takes only a few moments, yet it can gently calm the nervous system, quiet racing thoughts, and help reconnect the heart and the mind.

Return to Your Heart

Sit comfortably with your spine tall.

If it feels natural, place a hand over your heart.

Imagine your breath flowing in and out through the center of your chest.

Breathe a little slower and deeper than usual.

Perhaps inhale for four gentle counts…

and exhale for six or eight.

As you continue breathing, bring to mind someone or something you genuinely appreciate.

Allow that feeling of appreciation, gratitude, love, or care to gently fill your heart with each breath.

Continue for one to three minutes.

Your breath becomes a quiet reminder:

I am here.

I am safe in this moment.

I can meet this moment with kindness.

Step Into Nature

When life feels overwhelming, our minds often carry us far away from the present.

Nature gently invites us home again.

If you can, step outside.

Notice the warmth of the sun, the movement of leaves, the sound of birds, the fragrance of flowers, or the feeling of your feet upon the earth.

If you cannot be outdoors, simply close your eyes and imagine a place in nature where you have felt peaceful.

Allow yourself to linger there for a few moments.

Our nervous systems respond remarkably well to the rhythms of the natural world.

Let Sound Become Medicine

Music can also become a pathway back to peace.

One resource I return to often is the Nature Healing Society on YouTube, whose beautiful nature imagery and calming 528 Hz music create a wonderful space for slowing down, breathing deeply, and simply being.

Sometimes healing begins not with doing more…

but with allowing yourself to rest.

One Breath. One Moment. One Choice.

You don’t need to carry everything all at once.

Begin with this breath.

Then the next.

Little by little, your heart remembers what your mind may have forgotten:

Peace is always available in this present moment.

May you meet yourself with gentleness today.

With love,

Anna
